Grizzly River Rampage Remnants

Between the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Opry Mills in Nashville are the remnants of one of my favorite rides at the beloved Opryland Theme Park – the Grizzly River Rampage.

I probably rode those round rafts along the river a million times. I always wanted to get soaked by the waterfalls and water splashing into the raft; I would get back in line to ride it again if I didn’t think I got soaked enough. It was so much fun!

I hate that Opryland closed and some stupid people decided the Nashville area needed yet another mall in its place. This bitter thought always enters my mind when I hear of or see Opry Mills.

I am sad that this is all that’s left of the beloved theme park ride:

This and That 6.26.09

Good news! I went to the dentist earlier this week and was told that last year, I did not have a cavity! I obviously misinterpreted the diagnosis back then. I just had to get something minor filled because of how one of my teeth grew up – I guess that’s it. Anyway, the hygienist said I can revert back to saying that I have never had a cavity! I celebrated by eating a candy bar and soda.

My Google Reader recommended I check out a Nashville blog called Nashvillest, so I did. It’s been a fun and informative read for the past couple of weeks. Get some Nashville-area news points with some personality. For example, did you know that the previous owners of the land that Belmont University currently sits on at one time was home to something like an exotic animal zoo? Yeah, they’re finding the remnants of some of the stuff now.

Movies watched recently: Benjamin Button (sad, but very good), Slumdog Millionaire (again, sad but good. Not my absolute fave, though.), He’s Just Not That Into You (eh. It was cute. Glad I only paid $1 for it.), Double Jeopardy (love it every time I see it.), and saving the best for last … Finally finished the Bourne trilogy for the first time – loved it! It’s also fun to say “I’ve been there!” as he travels the world. I have a running list of new and old movies I want to see. Got any I should add to my list?

The 14th longest cave in the US

Cumberland Caverns - Welcome

Of course everyone knows that Cumberland Caverns in McMinnville, TN is the 14th longest cave in country. Tell me something I don’t know, you’re thinking.

I paid the ol’ cave system a visit recently. The last time I went was on a fifth-grade field trip. What better way to spend a miserably humid day than in a naturally air-conditioned cave? Sounds good to me!

Man, that place has changed a lot in the past 15 years! Wait, maybe that’s me who has changed. The grounds and the cave had both shrunk, I am convinced. The colorful and perfectly polished stones in the gift shop were still for sale and captured my eye; this time I resisted trading in my money. The little bathhouse was much smaller and reminded me of one at the summer camp I worked at years ago.

This time around, I just bought a $15 ticket, which included a tour of selective parts of impressive cave with a tour guide. She was great; however, she talked so fast with a thick accent that I could barely understand what she was saying. Thankfully I totally understood her when she said all the lights were going out so don’t get left behind. If I hadn’t been listening, you wouldn’t be reading this post right now.

One of the big hurrah parts of the cave is a room with a massive crystal chandelier where parties, receptions, and such are held. I remember eating a brown-bagged lunch in here on our field trip and thinking the room was super massive. This time it was a regular cave room (is there any such thing?) with a cheesy chandelier light show.

Cumberland Caverns is definitely out in the middle of nowhere, and the drive out there was nice. It’s something fun to do once, but it’s not something you have to make a point of visiting every year. If you do go, be sure to stop at City Café in downtown McMinnville for a tasty lunch.  It was definitely more fun that stopping at your typical fast-food extravaganza.

Of course the pictures don’t do justice, but here are a couple that turned out nicely:

Eiffel Tower x 3

eiffel tower

I have no desire to go to Paris.

So how in the world did I end up with two shirts and a keychain of the Eiffel Tower? This realization has baffled me recently.

The first t-shirt is one I bought a few years ago. It’s red with a montage of black and gold Eiffel Tower and travel stuff on it. (Ok, I just did a horrible job describing that and you probably have this horrific picture in your mind, but I promise, it’s not that bad.) I got the second shirt recently. It’s purple with a silk screen of the Eiffel Tower made out of lemons. It’s my French Lemons shirt, of course. A girl in the group went to Paris a few months ago and bought us all Eiffel Tower keychains, so now I am carrying a piece of France with me wherever I go.

I think the Eiffel Tower is pretty cool. It’s a worldwide landmark. It’s a historic place. And though I have no current desire to travel out of my way to visit, I probably will one day.

(Courtney, maybe your love of all things French will eventually inspire me.)

An evening of Chinese feasting

Ne how!

No, I am not asking how your knee is doing. But I do hope it is doing well. “Ne how” is “hello” in Chinese, which I think I am going to incorporate into my daily vocabulary.

It’s been seven years since I went to China – my first international travel experience. I think Chinese and other Asian cultures are fascinating, probably because they are so different from the daily culture I am immersed in. Oh, and I love the food. That’s a big plus. I definitely want to return to the vast country in the future!

My friend David just got back from a fun trip to China and has been craving authentic Chinese food since. (No, that does not include Americanized Chinese buffet food.) So what did he do? He invited along friends who had been to China (or at least appreciate the food and culture) for an evening of feasting.

What a feast it was!

pekingduckWe went to a place in Madison that serves one of China’s national foods called peking duck. I don’t remember if I had eaten it before, but I am usually up for trying authentic dishes like this, so I couldn’t turn down the opportunity. David had to order the ducks on Tuesday night so they could roast overnight. The waitresses showed us the roasted ducks before they cut it up, I guess so we knew it was actually duck. They looked a lot like Cornish hens to me. Well, whatever it was, two thumbs up because it was tasty! You eat peking duck by putting a piece of the flavorful skin, some pieces of meat, spring onions, and hoisin sauce in a paper-thin pancake and roll it up like you would a tortilla wrap. We also ordered a ton of side dishes and ate everything family-style … rice, lo mein, garlic vegetables, soup, eggrolls, and probably five more things I am forgetting. Gosh, my mouth is watering right now. Good news for me – I have leftovers to eat the next day!

To end the evening, I briefly met one of David’s roommates who is Russian. I was so excited to be able to speak the only Russian word I remember – “Privet” (hello). I may have said that to one other Russian person since I was surrounded by them last summer.

Watch out, I’m on my way to becoming fluent in Chinese and Russian!

Meet Ivy

Here are some pictures of my parents’ new puppy, Ivy. Though she’s not my dog, I can still claim her as my own. :)

She is the next Mia Hamm!

This and That to Begin June

Thanks, God, for the beautiful sunny weather and a break from the seemingly constant Seattle-like weather.

At the Lampo staff meeting today, we discussed this article. It can be applied not just to businesses, but also to relationships, families, etc.

Why do I continue to make myself buy apples when I put off eating them until as long as I can? What have apples ever done to me? Nothing bad, just giving me the nutrition I need. I don’t know what my deal is.

Over the weekend, I took my first trip out to Radnor Lake. I am such a dork for never going to this patch of Nashville wilderness before. While hiking through the woods, I saw seven deer! Other highlights from the weekend included a trip to my parents’ house to welcome the newest addition to our family—a puppy! Oh, and to celebrate my dad’s birthday, too. ;) I hope to get the pictures of the cute puppy, Ivy, soon. It was also fun going out to eat at Demos, relaxing on the front porch for hours, eating some delicious ice cream cake, and seeing my granny (who is, by the way, on Facebook!).
