Two Half Marathons = Full Marathon … Right?

smiling-and-runningAfter months of training, the big day finally came and now it’s over. Thank you, Lord.

Saturday I participated in the Country Music Half Marathon once again. Unlike last year, there was not a cloud in the sky to taunt us all with the threat of rain. It was so freakin’ hot, especially since I hadn’t trained at all in heat and humidity.

I was able to see quite a few of my fellow racing friends before the race which was great and made the waiting time pass by quickly. However, the combination of the heat and hills took a toll on my mind and body and I wasn’t able to keep up with my friends for very long. I was quite frustrated then and many other times along the course. However, I kept going—mainly at a brisk walk with spurts of jogging—for the full 13.1 miles. YAY!

Besides finishing the race, my other goal was to not pass out. I saw three people being picked up by ambulances along the course. For real. That wasn’t too encouraging. This caused me to drink even more water to attempt to stay hydrated. Good plan (though my side cramped up often)!

It was great to see quite a few familiar faces along the course, too! Thanks to my parents, Andy, Heather and the girls, Dayna, Lynne, Tiffany, Erin, Leigh, Sherry and others I know I missed because I was passing them by at lightning speed. If you’ve never run a long race like a half marathon, believe me when I say that seeing people you know to cheer you on means so much! It provides that extra boost of energy to sprint ahead (at least until you’re out of sight and then the sprinting might stop). Oh, and wearing a bright orange The Dave Ramsey Show shirt prompted quite a few “Go, Dave Ramsey!” and “We’re Debt Free” cheers along the way, too!

I finished in under three hours, about 25 minutes behind my finish time from last year. I was so exhausted after finishing the course. But I did it. And I got my medal, dang it! And I got two cool quick-dry shirts! And I didn’t get any blisters! And I can still walk! And Dave will reimburse my entry fee of $85! Woo hoo!

I probably walked at least another mile across the pedestrian bridge to the downtown Demos’ (one of my favorite restaurants ever) location for an amazing lunch, complete with lots of bread. For the rest of the day, I craved bread and salt. I ate quite a bit of it, too. But when you wog (walk/jog) for over 13.1 miles in just a few hours, you can justify carb-overload.  :)

I’m kinda burned out on running for the moment, so I plan on taking it easy with some light jogging, walking, bike riding, hiking, etc. for a while. Will I do the half marathon again next year? As of right now, my answer is no. Do not convince me otherwise.

Here are some of the pictures friends and family took of me along the course:

Heather got this shot of me. Can you tell I was surprised to see her and her awesome daughters?

hope.

Wow, I have been MIA from the blog for over a week. Thanks to some of my faithful readers for pointing this out to me on multiple occasions. I am so sorry to disappoint and cause tears. Now, dry those tears so that you can read this blog post (and the next because I am splitting the current happenings into separate posts).

Fear is the enemy of hope. – Dave Ramsey

The past couple of weeks have been super busy for me. If you’ve yet to become a part of the Dave Ramsey world, I’ll catch you up to speed. Last Thursday night, Dave hosted a FREE event called Town Hall for Hope from LifeChurch.tv in Oklahoma City. The event was simulcast in over 6,000 locations across the country and broadcast live and commercial-free on Fox Business Network and hundreds of radio stations. It is one of – if not the – largest webcasts in history. Learn more about the event here.

Though it was a one-night event, it took a TON of work and planning to get ready for it. Everyone who worked on it did it all in about six weeks. That basically means that we were very busy. It’s good to be busy instead of bored, especially when you’re busy doing work that matters! It was fun to be a part of it all.

If you missed the event, there will be ways to get this info very soon. Keep checking the website this week or contact me if you’re interested in watching the event.

What I Like About Spring

tulipsOpen windows during rain showers.

Colorful flowers.

Short sleeves, flowy skirts and flip flops.

Baseball games.

Longer days filled with sunshine.

Outdoor BBQs.

Blooming trees.

The scent of freshly mowed grass.

People walking, running, playing and picnicing outside.

Driving with the windows down.

Spring fever.

The anticipation of all that the longer days will bring – vacations, sunshine, relaxing, swimming, BBQing.

12

I completed 12 miles yesterday. The first twelve miles of the half marathon course. It was hilly. Very hilly. Though I walked some, I don’t care. I finished in one piece and was thankful to have friends there with me along the entire course. I think I made the mistake of running the first 2.5 miles a little faster than normal. It caught up with me.

We ran almost the entire course and didn’t even get a medal or free food for our efforts. So, of course, I made achievement certificates for everyone. You shouldn’t run 12 miles and not get an award. :)

Thankfully I only have one more long run which is the half marathon in less than two weeks. After that, I am taking a much-anticipated break.

Extreme Home-Baked Ziti: Improvised Edition

Well, it’s been about four months since I met (kinda, not really) Rachael Ray and bought her latest cookbook. I thought I should finally put the cookbook to use and make something scrumptious. The Spring-Summer Ziti caught my eye before I went to Publix earlier this week.

However, I didn’t get the right kind of tomatoes. I forgot the mozzerella cheese. And while I was cooking, I forgot to half the recipe and ended up with a TON of food.

Thankfully, my version turned out to be very good. My roommates and I have already eaten it all.

March Madness Bracket Update

bballBracket #1 was my legitimate bracket. I finished in 11th place with 45 game outcomes correct. Not bad considering 49 people were in the Lampo pool.

Bracket #2 was the mascot/logo bracket. I had high hopes. My hopes and dreams are now in a pile of trash. I picked only 35 correct outcomes with only one correct Final Four team (Michigan St.).

I think next year I will fill out a bracket based on the states I like or the players’ names. It’s a scientific process, you know.
