camp linden fall retreat: episode 3.

group shot If I go to a certain place multiple times, it’s hard to not compare the trips and rate one trip experience better than the others. I’m not comparing this Fall Retreat to others because they’ve all been very different and very great in their own ways!

Some highlights from the weekend include:

Tom Pussel of Fellowship Louisville bringing us messages revolving around Missio Dei (the mission of God) and the many discussions my breakout group had after each. Tom’s slideshow of his life in Louisville as a missionary – as we each are – was really powerful and has inspired me to do one myself. I’m a sucker for pictures.

Hanging out with friends, old and brand-new.
Hiking to a waterfall which actually turned out to be a trickle-fall.
Cowboy, chicken, conquerer.
Losing about 10 lbs. by playing ultimate frisbee.
Watching Tim sing “Hakuna Matata” while doing pushups in front of everyone.
Being led in worship by some very talented musicians.
Josh dropping his tray of food in the cafeteria.
debriefingBringing back the coolness of the front row.
Saturday night bonfire.
And of course I can’t forget the 2.5-hour debriefing session on the way home with 3 friends. :)

Possibly we’ll meet again next year, Camp Linden.

fall retreatin’

This time 4 years ago, I went to Camp Linden on a Fall Retreat with Campus Crusade. There was a ton of random stuff that happened over that weekend, and it stands out in my mind as one of the best retreats I went on in college. It’s actually pretty legendary. One reason is because it had a song. One of the Crusade staff dudes wrote it, and some of us will never let him forget it. I am pretty sure this song played over and over in our minds for months after we returned. (sorry you can’t hear it because that would make it even better)

We were so lonely before the Fall Retreat
But now we got homies, sisters, and peeps
We heard from Dave Patchin about the Christian life
Where we itched he was scratchin’
Most guys were just lookin’ for wives…

Camp Linden at the Fall Retreat
Don’t sprain a tendon or jump in the creek
Because I’ll make fun of you from up on the stage
Oh, no, I’m not one of you because I’m getting paid

There’s a party goin’ on and it lasts until dawn at Camp Linden
Not because the party’s fun but because it’s hard to sleep without linens (Lines)
Throw your hands up in the air like you just don’t care at Camp Linden
Tell your sistas and your friends they gonna know just where you been at Camp Linden (Linden)
DANCE BREAK!

Fall Retreat 2003 Video

Why am I telling you all this? Because I am going back to Camp Linden this weekend for another Fall Retreat! Heck yes! It’s going to be pretty fabulous. Here’s the Inversion video from last year:

total ridiculousness

So yesterday I found out again that I am being penalized for never having a mortgage payment, car payment, credit card, or other ridiculousness.

I tried to get a bill switched into my name. They are requesting that I pay a big deposit because I “failed” the credit check. That’s bull crap. Of course they don’t look at other things, like the rent and water bill I’ve always paid early. And it’s not just that I failed the credit check, but that I wasn’t given a reason as to why I failed. I even got my big people to talk to their big people, and their big people wouldn’t even budge, as in allowing me to get recommendation letters from my apartment complex and bank to waive the deposit. That’s bull crap, too.

If I got so frustrated over this on top of everyday life and being debt free, I can’t imagine what people who have mean creditors and bill collectors all day do. (This is what I think they should do.)

Anyway, good news is that I finally found out today that eventually that deposit would apply toward my bill. Did they bother to even explain that to me yesterday when I was frustrated? Nooooo. But hey, now I know to always ask that question (and of course get it in writing). It’s just annoying because I don’t want to let them hold on to my money interest-free when I’m going to pay them their freaking money that I actually owe them. But I do realize that it’s not as annoying as being in debt and having no money.

I hate big corporations that are ridiculous.

our deepest fear

free2

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
